Preinfuse
Complete setup

The best espresso setup under $1,000

A thousand dollars buys either one very capable appliance or two good ones. Which is right depends almost entirely on whether you would rather press a button or learn a craft.

In short

For $750–$1,000, Breville Bambino Plus paired with a Breville Smart Grinder Pro. That comes to roughly $700–$830 including the accessories you actually need.

Where the money goes

Grinder

This is the target split for the budget. The setups below may come in under this. We do not spend a budget just because it is there.

How it was reached:

  • A 37% starting share for the grinder at this budget.
  • +2 points: grinder spending buys more improvement per dollar at most budgets.

Who this is for

These recommendations were produced for a beginner making mostly a bit of everything, who cares most about value, with a total budget of $750–$1,000. Change any of those and the answer changes — run it for your own answers.

The setups

Three answers, because there is rarely one.

The one-appliance option

Barista Express

GrinderBuilt into the machine
included
EssentialsScale, tamper, distribution tool, basket
~$80
Everything, all in$680–$830

Why this combination

  • The Barista Express is forgiving to start on: it ships with pressurised baskets that tolerate an imperfect grind and PID holds the brew temperature without your involvement.
  • The Barista Express has room to improve with better technique and accessories.
  • The grinder is built in, so the whole equipment budget goes into one appliance and there is nothing else to buy or find room for.
  • The trade is that those burrs are the burrs you have — an integrated grinder cannot be upgraded separately.

What you give up

  • The integrated grinder is competent but is the part a keen owner outgrows first, and it cannot be replaced separately.
  • Single heating circuit, so there is a wait between shot and milk.

Choose something else if

  • Anyone planning to upgrade the grinder later
  • Light-roast enthusiasts chasing grind resolution
The least expensive that still works

Bambino + Smart Grinder Pro

$280–$350
EssentialsScale, tamper, distribution tool, basket
~$80
Everything, all in$560–$680

Why this combination

  • With no grinder built in, the Bambino improves every time the grinder does.
  • Breville states the Bambino reaches extraction temperature in 3 seconds, which is the difference between espresso on a weekday and espresso at the weekend.
  • The Smart Grinder Pro gives you 60 settings to dial in across — the grinder is where the shot is actually controlled.
  • Keeping the grinder separate means it can be improved later without replacing the machine.

What you give up

  • No PID, so brew temperature is not held as tightly as on Breville's Barista line.
  • Brewing and steaming share one heater — you wait between the shot and the milk.

Choose something else if

  • Making four milk drinks back to back
  • Buyers who want the machine to grind too

Also on the list

  • Scale, 0.1gEspresso is a ratio. You cannot hit one you are not measuring.
  • Tamper that fits the basketMachine tampers are often undersized, which leaves an unpacked ring.
  • Distribution tool or WDT needlesWorth adding once the grind is dialled in and channelling is the remaining problem.

What you could upgrade later

The grinder is the part that improves the cup most. A DF54 ($230–$300) is the usual next step, and it keeps working when the machine changes.

On the machine side, owners typically move to a Breville Barista Touch Impress ($1,400–$1,600).
