Best for milk drinks under $2,000You want several milk drinks in a row without waiting.
Grinds a double in about six seconds and drops almost all of it straight into the basket. Fast and low-retention by design, with 270 positions of adjustment — and loud enough that you will hear about it.

The Baratza Sette 270 is a grinder with conical burrs and micro-stepped adjustment, typically $400–$480. It suits fast mornings and espresso-first drinkers. It is the wrong choice for shared walls and early starts and heavy filter grinding.

Set the macro step, fine-tune on the micro ring, put the portafilter in the fork and press. It doses and stops on its own.
Where people go next: Niche Zero.
Read the duty cycle before buying: Baratza's own guidance is a maximum of 2 lb a day with rests between doses.
If noise matters more than speed, a DF54 or Niche Zero is a calmer machine for similar or slightly more money.
Every value carries a source marker. Values marked as Preinfuse derivations are our normalisation, not the manufacturer's wording.
Hand grinders deliver burr quality far above their price because you supply the motor. The cost is roughly a minute of effort per shot, every shot.
Mains-powered grinder.
Flat burrs tend to produce a narrower particle distribution, which many people read as clarity and separation. Conical burrs are cheaper to make, run cooler and are often described as producing a heavier, more forgiving cup. Burr quality and alignment matter more than shape.
Classified as conical from the cone-and-ring burr set Baratza documents.
Espresso is sensitive to very small grind changes. Stepless adjustment lets you land between two settings, which is the difference between a shot that runs in 25 seconds and one that runs in 40. Stepped grinders with fine enough steps are perfectly workable.
The number of discrete positions available. On a stepped grinder this is the practical limit of your precision.
Baratza documents 30 macro steps with 9 micro positions within each, which is where the model name comes from.
Whether the grinder actually reaches, and can be adjusted usefully within, the espresso range. Many well-regarded filter grinders cannot, and a grinder that only just reaches espresso leaves you no room to dial in.
Matters if this is your only grinder and you also make pour-over or French press.
Single-dosing means weighing beans per shot: fresher, easy to switch coffees, more steps. A hopper is faster in the morning but leaves beans sitting in the open and makes changing beans a chore.
Built-in scale doses to a target weight rather than a time. Removes the most common source of shot-to-shot variance without adding a separate scale.
The 270 doses by time; the 270Wi is the scale-equipped variant.
Grounds left inside the grinder between doses, which stale into the next shot. Only reported where the manufacturer documents it — independent figures vary too much by method to state as fact.
Classified from Baratza's documented vertical-throughput design; we do not state a number we cannot source.
Whether burrs and wear parts can be replaced, which decides the grinder's real lifespan.
Classified from Baratza's published spare-parts catalogue.
Machines where this grinder is the sensible partner rather than an expensive mismatch.

The Sette 270 is ahead on being forgiving to learn on and speed in the morning. The DF54 is ahead on room to improve. Neither is wrong — pick the one whose strength is the thing you actually care about. The DF54 also costs less, at $230–$300.
