Breville Dual Boiler

Best for milk drinks under $2,000

You want several milk drinks in a row without waiting.

Two boilers, PID on both, a heated group head and a 58mm portafilter. It brews and steams at the same time, which is the structural difference that separates it from everything cheaper Breville makes.

In short

The Breville Dual Boiler is a semi-automatic with dual boiler heating and a 58mm portafilter, typically $1,500–$1,700. It does not include a grinder, so budget for one alongside it. It suits milk-heavy households and enthusiasts who want control. It is the wrong choice for small kitchens and fast weekday mornings from cold.

How it fits

Preinfuse ratings, not measurements. Each one is produced by published rules from the specifications below — open any row to see which facts moved it.

What it does well

  • Genuine dual boilers with PID on both and a heated group head — temperature stability of a different order to the Barista line.
  • Brews and steams simultaneously, so a round of milk drinks stops being a queue.
  • 58mm commercial portafilter opens the entire accessory market: baskets, tampers, distribution tools, bottomless portafilters.
  • Adjustable brew temperature and programmable pre-infusion give real control over the shot.
  • A top-filling 2.5L tank you can reach without moving the machine.

Where it gives ground

  • Long warm-up compared with any ThermoJet machine — this is a plan-ahead appliance.
  • No grinder, and it deserves a good one, so the real budget is higher than the sticker.
  • Nearly 16 inches deep and heavy; it is not moving once it lands.
  • More machine than a household making two drinks a day will ever use.

Buy it for

  • Milk-heavy households
  • Enthusiasts who want control
  • Anyone building a setup they will keep for a decade
  • Back-to-back drinks

Look elsewhere if

  • Small kitchens
  • Fast weekday mornings from cold
  • Beginners who want guidance
  • Buyers without a grinder budget

Decided?

This machine needs a grinder. The pairings below are the ones that suit it, or the setup builder will split a budget across both.

Living with it

Switch on and let it come up to temperature. Grind, dose, distribute and tamp with whatever 58mm tools you like, pull the shot and steam at the same time.

Before you buy

Budget for the grinder before the machine. A Dual Boiler fed by a $150 grinder is a worse setup than a Bambino fed by a $500 one.

If nobody in the house wants to steam milk by hand, the Barista Touch Impress or Oracle Jet automate that — at the cost of control.

Why this, not the MaraX PL62X?

The Dual Boiler is ahead on speed in the morning and being forgiving to learn on. The MaraX PL62X is ahead on counter space. Neither is wrong — pick the one whose strength is the thing you actually care about.
