Baratza Encore ESP

Best for a first espresso grinder under $500

You want something forgiving to learn on.

The default first espresso grinder. Half of its forty settings sit inside the espresso range, which is the whole point — most cheap grinders reach espresso only at the very end of their travel, leaving nowhere to dial in.

In short

The Baratza Encore ESP is a grinder with conical burrs and stepped adjustment, typically $180–$230. It suits a first espresso grinder and pairing with a bambino, gaggia classic or dedica. It is the wrong choice for light-roast chasing and single-dosing workflows.

How it fits

Preinfuse ratings, not measurements. Each one is produced by published rules from the specifications below — open any row to see which facts moved it.

What it does well

  • Twenty of its forty settings are inside the espresso range, so there is genuine room to dial in rather than one usable click.
  • A dedicated grounds catch that doses straight into 54mm and 58mm portafilters.
  • Baratza sells the parts. These grinders get repaired rather than replaced.
  • The cheapest grinder here that we would put in front of a non-pressurised basket.

Where it gives ground

  • Stepped adjustment: sometimes the shot you want sits between two settings.
  • Hopper-fed, so beans sit in the open and switching coffees means emptying it.
  • Retention is not zero and Baratza does not publish a figure; expect to purge when changing beans.
  • Fine for medium roasts; light roasts push it.

Buy it for

  • A first espresso grinder
  • Pairing with a Bambino, Gaggia Classic or Dedica
  • Households that drink both espresso and filter

Look elsewhere if

  • Light-roast chasing
  • Single-dosing workflows
  • Machines above about $1,000

Living with it

Beans in the hopper, twist to set, dose by time into the portafilter catch. Purge a little when you change coffee.

Where people go next: DF54, Baratza Sette 270, Niche Zero.

Before you buy

If your machine came with pressurised baskets only, this grinder is still the right first upgrade — it is what makes non-pressurised baskets usable.

A stepless grinder like the DF54 costs a little more and removes the between-settings problem entirely.

Why this, not the Opus 2?

The Encore ESP is ahead on speed in the morning and being forgiving to learn on, and the Opus 2 does not lead it on anything we rate. The reason to prefer the Opus 2 is price or availability, not capability.
